Illumina’s Understand Your Genome Symposium registration is open for a week and it will close on 14th December. Illumina’s CLIA certified personal whole genome sequencing service is offering to sequence your whole genome for $5000 and also be part of a two-day “Understand Your Genome Symposium” in 2013 summer. One also gets a iPad to explore his/her genome using Illumina’s MyGenome app.
The symposium serves to offer a hands-on opportunity to learn about the reports on “diseases, conditions, and traits” and also learn about the latest in personal genome sequencing technologies from academic experts.
Illumina typically takes in about 50 participants and at this year’s fall event on October had 48 people sequencing their genomes and “interpreted 340 genes associated with 140 different diseases“. The first day of symposium had many leading researchers lik Eric Topol from the Scripps Translational Science Institute.
The 2013 Understand Your Genome Symposium will be held on 14-15 May 2013 at Illumina’s headquarters in San Diego. Visit Illumina’s event registration to learn more details about the Understand Your Genome Symposium.

Individual Whole Genome Sequencing Price History at Illumina
Illumina launched the personal genome sequencing service in the summer of 2009 and during its launch it costed $48,000 to do the whole genome sequencing, lowest price at that time (Instead of iPad the service came with a iMac). And in the summer of 2010, Illumina dropped the individual genome sequencing service price to $19,500 and started offering the service for $14,500 per genome for groups of five or more participants.
In the summer of 2011, Illumina dropped the individual genome sequencing service price to $9,500. In 2012, Illumina launched Rapid Fast Track individual whole genome sequencing service (with two week turn around time) for the price of $9,500. Illumina also launched a Rapid CLIA certified Individual genome sequencing with two weeks turn around in 2012, but did not reveal the price.
Get Your Family Sequenced for Free from Personal Genome Project
Don’t have $5000 to shell out to sequence your genome. The open Personal Genome Project initiative is looking for families to volunteer their genome from non-european families (Father-Mother-Child trio). Visit http://blog.personalgenomes.org/2012/11/29/seeking-diversity/ to learn more about sequencing your whole genome for free and contribute to the open initiative.
