Jonathan Rothberg, CEO of Ion Torrent, announced in a talk at AGBT 2013 that Ion Torrent’ PII chip will be available in mid 2013.  Initially, Ion Proton II was slated to be available in early 2013. During the launch Ion Proton PII chip will produce 32 Gb output at 100bp read length. By the time Ion Torrent unveils PIII chip starting at 64GB output, PII will be producing at 64GB output.

At the launch of Ion PI Chip, Ion Proton could sequence 60-80 million reads and up to 10 Gb of output with the read lengths of 100 to 200 bp in just 2-4 hours. Rothberg showed that currently Ion Proton on PI chip produced 16 Gb of output with over 95M reads and mean read length of 170 bp (200 base mode) in exome sequencing. Internal data from Ion Torrent showed that Ion Proton PI chip can produce 20.8 Gb output with 227 bp mean read length.

Rothberg also touted the success of Ion Torrent benchtop sequencers. He claimed that there are over 150,000 Ion Torrent PGM sequencing runs worldwide since its launch and over 12,000 Proton runs since its launch. It is interesting to compare these numbers to what Illumina claimed on MiSeq runs, data submissions and publications.

@iontorrent This means 8Gb after proper trimming and filter for >Q20 bases, which means 15Gb on Miseq will be = to 32 Gb on the PII.bioWiz
